Volunteers are at the heart of the work undertaken by Treasury of Country Australian History Inc (TOCAH).
From recording oral histories to supporting research and organisation, volunteers help ensure Australia’s regional, rural and remote stories are preserved with care, accuracy, and respect.
Why volunteer?
Much of country Australia’s history exists outside formal institutions — held in memories, personal records, and lived experience. Volunteers play a vital role in helping these stories be recorded and preserved before they are lost.

Volunteer opportunities
TOCAH welcomes volunteers across a range of roles, including:
Oral history and interviews
Assisting with the recording of personal and family stories through interviews, either in person or remotely.
Research and content support
Helping research historical events, regional communities, industries, and people to provide context and accuracy to stories.
Writing and editing
Assisting with written content for stories, summaries, transcripts, or supporting material.
Administration and organisational support
Helping with coordination, record-keeping, and behind-the-scenes tasks that keep the organisation running smoothly.
Technical and digital support
Assisting with website content, digital archives, podcasts, or related platforms.
Archiving and collections
Supporting the organisation, cataloguing, and preservation of photographs, documents, and historical material.
What volunteering looks like
Volunteering with TOCAH is flexible and shaped around individual availability and skills. Some volunteers contribute regularly, while others assist on a project or occasional basis.
All volunteers are supported with guidance and clear expectations. No one is required to work beyond their comfort or capacity.
Respect, care, and responsibility
TOCAH places strong emphasis on ethical practice, cultural respect, and sensitivity when working with personal histories and material. Volunteers are expected to approach all stories with care, confidentiality, and integrity.
Training, support, and guidance are provided to ensure volunteers feel confident and prepared in their roles.
